Drawing the King's surprised expression of distaste was pretty satisfying.

The entire webcomic, being explained with one panel.

Reply Flash (Guest), October 16th, 2018, 5:45 pm

...I don't get it.

Reply Aqui (Guest), October 16th, 2018, 5:53 pm

Please explain I'm sorry...but, I don't get it.

Reply MK_Wizard, October 16th, 2018, 6:07 pm

Wait... did his face just just change?! I am confused.

Reply poki (Guest), October 16th, 2018, 6:26 pm

Wait...do people see him differently depending on their age or experiences? Hence the need to wear a mask to preserve the same identity for everyone? (Innocent child sees less "rugged" face?) Or is everyone seeing what we see in the last panel?

Reply Dawn (Guest), October 16th, 2018, 7:42 pm

@poki: I think everyone IS seeing what we see. But you're right. The fair changes depending on what strong emotions/feelings people have towards him. Up to this point Chris changed to see him in a more dark and creepy way. This made him look scary and terrifying. BUT in the eyes of our innocent little prince here? He's a kind man. So he looks beautiful. (honestly to me he looks like Chris's bro... but idk)

Reply H0lyhandgrenade, October 16th, 2018, 7:54 pm

@Dawn: I told myself I wasn't gunna reply and explain in this chapter, but screw it I will say this. A few people have said he looks like Toby, and this was... Not intentional, lol. I blame baby H0ly (me, years ago when he first showed up) who didn't have a good enough design sense or enough skill to make sure he looked distinctly different enough.

Reply Broktus (Guest), October 20th, 2018, 9:14 pm

@H0lyhandgrenade: He also kinda looks like Atticus.

Vaguely. Maybe it's the hair?

Reply Jiasura, October 17th, 2018, 2:09 am

Oh no now I don't know what to feel

So here it is, the big reveal: you get what you need, but you also get back what you give out.

The Fair--what a pun!

Chris fails the Fair test on both points: she gets what she needs, but isn't grateful; and she doesn't recognize herself in the mirror.

Her son, who doesn't appear to have the greatest parenting, runs from his parents to a source of whatever he needs, as did his mother when she felt alone and hurting. Is he like his self-absorbed parents?

What happens when a Fair meets a decent person with a little self-knowledge? Or aren't such people attractive to Fair--not needy enough? Is the neediness what attracts the Fair to people in the first place, and so the interaction is bound to be doomed?

First time posting a comment, your work is really amazing H0ly I'm very impressed about the face you've succeed to make for the fair O.o

I've been reading this comic from the very beginning, and I don't leave a comment... well, ever... but now i feel like i need to.

This must be one of the most incredible comic pages I've ever seen. Ever. And I read a lot of comics. So thank you so much for this, HOly.

So, it's still open what attribute does his appearance reflect exactly. My guess is that it reflects the innermost of the people around him. It would make sense; beautiful face for the innocence of a child, ugly face for the corruption of the adults. That's my bet.

I only wonder the fact that Toby seemed to recognize that he was the same person he had already met before, so did he saw him the same way both times? If he did, what did he saw? I guess it remains to be seen if we ever find that out.

Anyway, absolutely stunning writing. Great job.

Daaaaang.... so the Fair's face changes depending on the person he's connected with, or something... no wonder he was so angry at Christine. Her selfishness and spoiled behavior kind of literally ruined his face, because he'd connected himself to her and her actions turned him hideous. I think, hopefully I got that right. Dang.

Reply Clau (Guest), October 18th, 2018, 11:25 am

So, Fairs just reflect the imperfections of humans ?
That would explain why adults hate/fear them so much, Fairs show them how ugly they became with time.
And Rumple was hidding his face to Chris because he loves her and knew that she was growing up and wanted to preserve her from seing her true self changing. Maybe because he didn't want to hurt her, or because he was hoping that she could keep her child soul a little longer ?
Anyway, when she rejects him, it's not really him that she hates, but herself, right ? She doesn't want to face herself and her bad decisions (leaving her brother, foolishly believe that to marry the king was a wonderful idea, just because she "deserves better", arrogance + selfishness).
I don’t know if I’m right, but in that case Rumple’s love is beautiful. In spite of the fact that she makes him being ugly, he still loves her. He loves her although she hates herself. And that’s probably the reason why she hates him too, for loving her while he perfectly knows how ugly she is inside.

I got carried away but I needed to express myself, those kind of stories always leave a strange feeling of nostalgia and emptiness :’)
But don’t get me wrong, this comic is awesome :3

Ps: I’m French and it’s not a scoop that we’re bad in English, sorry for eventual mistakes or weird sentences

Oooh, that's a nice twist! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all. I bet it wouldn't stop the King from killing Rumple now, but it might stop Chris.

@Holyhandgernade So... you think it's possible to add a page explaining the effect people have on the fair's appearance. Maybe we can have Rumpelstiltskin narrating while showing us visuals of people looking at fairs or something... I dunno. Just a thought
