It woulda been easier to just draw him DROPPING him but I resisted.

It's decided then, I'll do a Q&A at the end of the comic :> I might even do it as a video, that'd be fun.

In the meantime however. So when it came to the design of the Fair's face, I had a particular goal in mind. I didn't just want him to look ugly; I wanted to make it be that even if you squinted or tilted your head and tried to be a little generous... He still wouldn't stop being ugly. Not even when you got used to him. I don't entirely think I managed to achieve this however, as I definitely got used to him pretty quickly (That could just be me however, as I've ended up spending a lot of time looking at him simply from the nature of the task). Also I can't deny that I accidentally made him look kinda like a dark elf in Skyrim, especially the first times I drew him. Wasn't my intention but these kinds of things happen. Seems I'm not used to actively trying to draw extremely ugly people... It's so much easier when you're not actually trying to lol.

Ah'll sithee later.

I look forward to the Q&A! =D But before that, definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next. <3 And I think your design for the Fair works well for your goal. =)

Ding dong the king is getting owned! This makes me so happy! :D

I think the tricky thing with drawing ugly people (and I'm saying it as someone who has way more trouble with drawing conventionally pretty people) is that once you like someone or even just get used to them pretty much no face is ugly. So I guess to have a consistently ugly character you'd have to have an inconsistently designed character but I'm not sure it's worth is since 90% of it is perception anyway.

A misshapen face will look ugly when the expression on it is ugly--angry, scornful, arrogant. If the Fair is thoughtful, or worried, or sad, then as an artist you are facing a real challenge--we will be reading the expression and responding to that first.

Sure, he looks pretty ugly, but the question that comes to my mind is... does he shave? Is that the utmost facial hair he can grow, or does he shave like every few days? How do Fairs shave? Would they get razor burn easily, leading to them not shaving often, or do they use magic to remove their facial hair? Do they even care? They wear masks all the time, so it might not even be a consideration to shave. Are all Fairs this ugly? Is that why they wear masks? Where did he get the earring from? Why does he have an earring, anyways? Does it hold some significance, or did he just think it'd look cool? How do Fairs kiss if they always wear masks? Do they kiss? Do they mate? No, Rumple said Fairs aren't born, so they probably don't. Do they have to take off their masks to kiss, but because they always wear masks kissing is more intimate 'cuz they're face-naked? Is this guy face-naked right now? Should he be embarrassed? How long has it been since this dude has seen the sun with his naked eye? How does he even see beneath that mask he always wears? Is it more Fair magic? So many questions!

But yeah, while facial expressions can deform any face into looking ugly, that only really works with more goofy/comical art styles, which wouldn't fit into how H0ly draws her characters, since she goes for more realistic features. I like how she drew the Fair- though she could've thrown in some crooked teeth and asymmetrical facial facial structure (broken nose, lazy eye, etc.) to make him look REALLY hideous- but I think she chose a good amount of ugly.

@Broktus: All good questions. Also, I might have given him less symmetrical features, the only problem with it is it's difficult to not just make it look like you drew it wrong xD
