Oh Toby you're breaking my heart there ;A;

Reply MK_Wizard, February 12th, 2018, 6:41 pm

This pulls at my heartstrings so far because either way, Chris is still suffering no matter what. However... as much as I hate repeating it, she did it to herself. She thought she was above her life, but at least she was a free woman who would have at least had a chance at a real happy marriage. Not this trap marriage where she's an overglorified prisoner and this poor boy, what is he going to do when he comes to know his father and mother's history? And he WILL find out. They always do.

What I'm getting a vibe for here is that they basically poison or in some way debilitate these men so that they can hold their health over their heads - they serve in exchange for treatment, or they're "done for". Honestly though, I'm surprised that works. Make a man desperate enough, and he will decide it's not worth it and take others out with him; it doesn't at all seem like a viable way to make a loyal and strong royal guard.

Also, Toby is reconfirmed as Best And Most Selfless Brother Of All Time

I get the impression it's more complicated than just holding their health over them. It seems like an enchantment of some kind and I'd guess there's a way of controlling them so they don't revolt.

And even if the soldiers decided it's not worth it and gave up, the king has a literally endless supply of peasants to replace those guards. At least, that's the impression I get given what Toby said and what happened to his father and the others who came back wrong after the army.

@Unknown: This is one of those rare times that I'm gunna confirm or deny a theory! We're so near the end now that I might as well, and I feel like it.

Basically you're both right. The health is held against them, but that's not all. A LOT has been done to these guys to make them perfect. Perfectly strong, perfectly robust, perfectly obedient, but it comes at a cost of their health. With maintenance they can be kept going. Without it, they... Can't. We've seen that this process has been going on a while, but it's been fiddled with and honed since back then so things are slightly different.

The others are more broken down than Toby. Has he lasted a bit because he's newer, or because he's so dang hard headed and determined? Who could say...

I would have loved to have Toby exposit all of this, but unfortunately he's just not the type 8| There's also probably more too but I should leave it up in the air. Either way, I'm glad you guys got it ^^

@H0lyhandgrenade: Oh cool! Thanks for that extra info, I'm really pleased we got all this additional information. It does make a lot more sense that they magically enhance the guards, as well. Since magic is involved, I guess that would explain why one of them doesn't just snap and kill the king - there must be safeguards in place to prevent that, thus the 'perfectly obedient' part.

Excited to see how the story wraps up! THE END IS NIGH

Thanks for the confirmation! :)

My theory:. Toby as a kid made a deal with a fair in the past that involved Chris, thus him being so overprotective of Chris. Whatever the deal was is broken when the farm is burned into flames, so the fair finds Chris and kidnaps her as part of the deal. Toby rescues Chris from the fair with a punch to the face and maybe another deal? Or perhaps Toby made a deal with the fair he beat up now to somehow keep Chris safe from the king? It seems implied in the conversation that now Toby became a fair too, which confuses the hell out of me. Perhaps as part of a deal he made with another fair?

Reply Unknown (Guest), February 13th, 2018, 12:20 pm

He's not a fair. Whatever happened to him is the king's doing - it's been implied before that the king does something to the men in his army. Remember Chris and Toby's alive, but basically comatose father? Looks like the same thing happened to Toby, only Toby is still useful so he hasn't been left to rot like the father was.

@Unknown: OHHHH THAT'S what that was referring to. I didn't make the connection about their dad, I thought he just plain died.

Thanks for clearing that up, Unknown. Still gonna go with the first part of my theory though, for funsies.
