I'm also surprised that her King didn't force her.

... Yeah. It is a little strange.

Always wondered that about the story myself...that and if Rumplestiltskin could spin gold into straw...

Reply Subaru (Guest), May 27th, 2015, 1:24 am

What if he's always known Chris didn't spin gold and only let her stay in hopes of drawing out Rumple? With plans of imprisonment and more gold?

Reply Takeshre, May 27th, 2015, 3:58 am

...Pretty sure the gold wasn't the point, at least in this story. The King needed to gain the trust of his people, all while separating himself from previous monarchs and outdated practices. What better way to do both than by making a magic-using commoner into a figurehead queen?

Then again, I can't think of any reason to particularly avoid abusing a power like that, aside from the implications of creating capital from nothing (suspicion, inflation, etc.). It's fairly possible that he knew that she was lying, but in that case he would have to be aware of the outside help that she had recieved, which is something that I doubt he'd simply disregard.

So, it comes down to: Just how clever is the King, and how much does he know?

Reply Unclever title, May 27th, 2015, 8:18 am

It depends on just how much of an asshole the king is deep down.

If not entirely then he could just be feeling residual guilt built up from killing her brother. That kind of thing would make him reluctant to push on the spinning gold from straw thing.

If he us deep down terrible, consider, if he forced her into spinning more gold he might find it difficult to keep using her as a figurehead queen. She'd be a lot less cooperative perhaps, less able to smile when she is needed to smile. When he no longer needs her as a Queen then he may resort to use her for riches again.

I think it's probably a mix of both of those things.

@Unclever title: Well, while he certainly seems manipulative, he hasn't really been all out EVIL yet. There's the possibility that he has no ulterior motives besides the obvious political ones.

There's also the viewpoint in which Chris is and has been in the wrong this entire time, obsessed with fantasies and acting selfishly, while the characters we antagonize are simply realistic and practical.

If I remember correctly, in the original the girl didn't lie. It was her father who lied, all the time, so much so that he even lied to the king. The father was the one who said she could spin straw into gold, and then got stuck handing her over when the king decided "That sounds like cool power, I want her to work for me!"

Is it weird I want this to become a tv series or at least a movie?

Oooouuuh maybe the prince genially likes her?
