I think I understand where she's coming from. He was fairly kind to her when she was a child and gave her the companionship a child her age needed. I get the idea of missing that side of someone you used to know, even if they did horrible things later on. It's not necessarily the person you miss - it's the person you thought they were.

I had a really nasty falling out with a friend a few years ago and looking back, they were increasingly manipulative and cruel toward the end. I will never want that person back in my life after the things they did, but I do sometimes look back on our early friendship and miss the kind person I thought they were.

I think I know what unknown is talking about. I had a similar falling out, only I don’t know who was the manipulative one, or if we both were and therefore couldn’t tolerate each other. Anyway, I have friends who are still friends with them, and I genuinely wish them well, and it’s hard not to look back on the innocence, blind friendship of your youth.

I appreciate seeing people’s comments here about looking back on previous friendships, I’ve been through that too. But didn’t Chris literally see the Fair throughout her life with his/their 3 different faces? I kind of read this page as her being deliberately vague and holding back on telling Toby what she knows. While it’s also possible for her to have complicated feelings for the different versions of the Fair.
